Ingredient Notes

The mocha milkshake ingredients - chocolate ice cream in a glass bowl, milk in a white jug, coffee, cocoa powder and whipped cream in small bowls, on a pale grey marble background.
  • Ice Cream – I’ve used chocolate ice cream here, but you could use vanilla or coffee-flavoured ice cream instead. It’s best not to use one with chocolate chips, unless you want little crunchy bits in your milkshake. If you’re not using chocolate ice cream, you might want to add a bit of extra cocoa powder to make sure the chocolate flavour is strong enough. To make the shake dairy free or vegan, choose a dairy free/vegan ice cream.
  • Milk – You can use any dairy or non-dairy milk that you like. I used whole milk (full-fat milk here in NZ).
  • Coffee – This is a choose-your-own-(coffee)-adventure. You can use instant coffee (I used freeze-dried instant coffee) or you can use 1-2 shots of espresso. If you don’t like the coffee buzz but like the taste, you can use decaf coffee.
  • Cocoa Powder – Use your favourite unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder.
  • Whipped Cream – Optional, to top the milkshakes.

Tips for Making Mocha Milkshakes

I don’t really need to show you how to make mocha milkshakes because they’re so quick and easy to make, but I will give you a couple of tips.

If you’re using powdered or granulated coffee, start by mixing it with a couple of tablespoons of hot water until it dissolves. Then whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth and lump-free.

A small glass jug with coffee and cocoa mixed together, with a small metal whisk.

If you’re using espresso coffee, make your shot/s and then stir in the cocoa.

Then the coffee and cocoa mixture just gets blended up with the ice cream and milk until you get a smooth, creamy mocha milkshake.

Extra Topping Ideas

I topped the mocha shakes with a dollop of softly whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder mixed with a little bit of powdered sugar, but here are some other topping ideas.

  • You could drizzle the milkshakes with caramel sauce, chocolate caramel sauce or for a special treat (or after a long day), some rum caramel sauce. (You could also add any of the caramel sauces into the milkshake itself, for a caramel mocha milkshake ✨)
  • Sprinkle with grated chocolate.
  • Dust with instant coffee powder instead of cocoa powder.

Total Time: 5 minutes
Cuisine: American
Category: Dessert, Drinks
Makes: 2 large milkshakes

Ingredients

Coffee

  • 2 teaspoons powdered or granulated coffee powder
  • OR
  • 1-2 shots espresso coffee

Milkshake

  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 5 scoops chocolate ice cream or other complementary flavour – see notes
  • 1 ½ cups milk any kind

Optional Toppings

  • whipped cream
  • extra cocoa powder or hot chocolate powder

Instructions

  • Start by preparing your coffee.
If using instant or granulated coffee, place it into a small jug or bowl with the cocoa powder. Pour over 2 tablespoons of boiling water and whisk to remove any lumps.
If using espresso coffee, prepare your espresso shot/s, then add in the cocoa powder and whisk until combined and smooth.
Set aside to cool slightly before making the milkshakes.
  • Put the ice cream, milk, and the coffee/cocoa mixture into a blender jug, and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into glasses, and top with whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder, if you like.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

Ice Cream – Instead of chocolate ice cream, you could use vanilla, coffee, or any other complementary flavour. If not using chocolate ice cream, you can increase the cocoa powder slightly for more chocolate flavour, and if using coffee ice cream, you may want to reduce the coffee amount slightly.
Coffee – The amount of coffee can be adjusted depending on how much of a coffee kick you want in your milkshake.
To make the mocha milkshakes dairy free or vegan, use a dairy free/vegan ice cream and non-dairy milk.
Milkshake consistency – To make the milkshake thicker, use more ice cream; to make it thinner, add more milk.
