Floral Cake Topper Tutorial

Floral Cake Topper Tutorial

Learn how to make a beautiful floral cake topper in any colour using preserved flowers and leaves. Perfect for birthday and wedding cakes!

You will need a metal hoop in the colour of your choice, and in a size that will suit the size of your cake. These hoops can be purchased from craft shops and online.

You'll also need some preserved flowers and leaves. These are available online and from some florists. For more information, check out the link below.

To attach the flowers you can tie them on using "invisible" thread - a clear nylon sewing thread, or use glue. Thread is a the easier, less messy option!

Start by playing around with the flowers and leaves to get an idea of the design you like, keeping in mind the size and the rest of the design of your cake.

Begin attaching the pieces to the hoop. I have used pink thread here as an example, because the clear thread is hard to see. Use a double knot, and cut the ends to 1-2 mm long.

Start at the top point of the design and work down, overlapping the stems as you go. Where possible, group pieces together so you can attach multiple stems to the ring with one piece of thread.

Because of how the flowers and leaves are preserved, the stems are generally quite flexible, so you can bend them to conform around the ring.

Continue adding more flowers and leaves until you're happy with the design. Use short overlapped pieces to hide where the pieces meet in the middle.

To attach the floral cake topper to the cake and make it "float", you can insert skewers into the cake, as shown below, and rest the topper on them.
